Sofia is definitely one of the Europe’s gems and I would definitely say to anyone who is planning a trip to Europe, Sofia should definitely be on the list of places to see.
PLAN & DO RESEARCH
I am all about being spontaneous and getting lost in an adventure, but if you read my first post about being in Sofia you would know that a bit more research definitely should have been done. Research things such as how to use public transport, whats appropriate to wear culturally, how to ask certain questions etc. Just make sure to be prepared, I read a lot of blog posts which really helped even though they weren’t specific about travelling to Sofia.
WHERE TO STAY
I would 100% recommend that whether your are travelling solo or in a group, that you stay at Hostel Mostel. Hostel Mostel is the perfect place to stay if you are on a budget, want to meet people in a relaxed and social environment and if you want to experience Bulgarian culture. They also have so many tips on their website of things to do and tips for travelling in Bulgaria. They organise free tours, trips to Rila Mountain and Monastery, bar crawls in the evening and you have breakfast and dinner included in your stay. Honestly, what more could you ask for? The rooms are clean and comfortable, most importantly the staff are amazing and incredibly helpful!
WHERE TO EAT
One of the incredible things about Sofia is there are multiple places to eat and if you stay at Hostel Mostel, they give you a map of the city which highlights the best places to eat for different cuisines. I would recommend going to a traditional Bulgarian restaurant, there are many scattered around Sofia. Its a bit cheeky, but I would also say go to McDonalds and try the chicken Big Mac – we don’t have them in London so when I saw it I got excited. However, I did not try it so please tell me how it goes Lool.
WHAT TO DO
Everythingggggggg! When in Sofia I would definitely say you need to take a trip to Rila Monastery and Mountain. It is the perfect place to get lost in your thoughts and reflect on life (cliche, I know). Walking tours of Sofia are great, whether you lead yourself or follow a group. Eat lots of food, visit Lady’s market and do a big of haggling for souvenirs.
The most important thing when travelling is to have fun and be spontaneous. Don’t follow a super strict and tight itinerary, be adventurous. You don’t know when you will next be in the country so enjoy every moment of it and find all its hidden gems.
