The beautiful Belizean island of Caye Caulker is located off the coast of Belize, a 45 minute water taxi ride away from Belize City. With the island having such a Caribbean influence, your taste buds will be satisfied by the rice and pea, jerk chicken or even the sea food.
“No shoes, no shirts.. no problem!” With the roads of Caye Caulker being car and litter free, both visitors and locals wonder around barefoot. Where the only methods of transport are golf carts, bikes and your legs; you can enjoy the island free of traffic and pollution.
Here are 10 reasons why you should visit Caye Caulker:
1. YOUR WELCOMING COMMITTEE
You are helped off the water taxi and as you walk along the dock, and throughout the island you hear – “Welcome to the island.” The moment you get to Caye Caulker, you feel welcomed and at home.
2. THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE WATERS THAT SURROUND THE ISLAND
The waters that surround the island are breathtakingly blue and give you a sense of paradise. One of the best experiences is seeing the sunset over the blue waters – definitely one of the biggest reasons to visit Caye Caulker. Its magical and indescribable.
3. THE MOUTH-WATERING FOOD
With Belize being a Central American country with Caribbean influence, means you cannot go wrong with the food. Jerk chicken, rice and peas, fresh fish – you’ll definitely be eating well on this island.
4. THE LOVELY LOCALS
Caye Caulker’s locals are amongst the world’s friendliest. Wherever you go on the island, you are metres away from a friendly helping hand. Right from when you step off the water taxi, you are welcomed to the island by locals. If you need any recommendations for anything, they are all more than happy to give you genuine advice and tips.
5. THE MOST MAGICAL SUNSETS
The most breathtaking and magical experience.
6. RUM PUNCH AND BELIKIN BEER
Two of the must-have drinks in Belize, rum punch and Belikin beer. Like most Caribbean islands, rum is the drink of choice and this Caribbean influenced island is no exception. At the bar at the Split, you can get rum punch made with coconut rum. Best. Punch. Ever. Belikin is the beer of Belize – actually brewed in Belize. If you’re a beer drinker, when in Belize, have a sip or two.
7. CHILLING AT THE SPLIT
The famous Split is a body of water that separates North Caye Caulker from South Caye Caulker. The Split is great if you want to have a little swim or snorkel, but also has one of the island’s most popular bars located there. You can find many locals and tourists chilling at the Split watching the sunset with a Belikin beer or rum punch in hand.
8. SNORKELLING, SCUBA DIVING AND SWIMMING
Another one of my 10 reasons to visit Caye Caulker is the snorkelling, scuba diving and swimming. If you like to be at one with the water, there are many different activities you can do. Visit Caye Caulker where you can dip your toes in The Split, scuba dive in The Great Blue Hole or snorkel in Belize Barrier Reef.
Whether you are trying these water sports for the first time, or you are extremely experienced – there are many agencies ran by locals with different experiences on offer. Caye Caulker is perfect for all you water babies!
9. PARADISE ON A BUDGET
Caye Caulker may not be Bora Bora or the Maldives, but for those of you who want to experience luxury and an island paradise, Caye Caulker can give you that. The best thing about it is travelling there is not expensive, especially if you travel through Cancun or Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Once you have reached Caye Caulker, the prices are pocket friendly (based on the British Pound).
10. THE ISLAND VIBES – GO SLOW!
The island’s slogan is ‘Go Slow’ – which is one of the biggest reasons as why you should visit Caye Caulker. If you’re someone like myself, who is constantly busy and forever in a hurry; sometimes you forget to really enjoy the moments in day.
If islanders see you rushing from point A to B, they will have no shame in telling you to slow down. They say that by rushing everywhere, you’re only rushing to your grave. The island vibes are amazing and I found genuine inner happiness while I was there. I learnt to live my best life daily.
That’s it! Book your ticket, pack your bag and head to Caye Caulker. The beautiful island has so much to offer and while you’re there, you can head to some of the other Belizean islands. If this list wasn’t enough, read about my time in Belize, here, and check out my video on YouTube.
